Project: To create a reflective film that fosters cultural values.
Anna Yin used her Matchmaker MicroGrant to create a poetry film titled “Awakening” inspired by public art in Mississauga. The short film was produced and directed by Anna Yin with cinematography by Sarah Hei and Roy Marques.
“Awakening” examines over 10 pieces of public art throughout Mississauga. Anna Yin not only uses these visual areas of the city but also words to discuss the land and its history. The aim was to ‘reveal the city’s unique history and culture with beautiful natural scenes’ as Anna Yin points out on her website.
In Anna’s own words about the project, she says, “When I was Mississauga’s inaugural poet laureate, I envisioned a project that would link poetry and public art in a collaborative film. To realize this goal, I enrolled in an eight-month course on film-making in 2021. With teamwork, we made a short film for which I served as producer. The success of my “Here and Now, Discover Mississauga and More” haiku project last year greatly encouraged me. As a result, I have initiated a new project with enthusiastic support from local artists and sponsors.”
The video project was released in September of 2023. It is now available to view here:
