SAMS Stories: Carla Gonzalez

Carla is a multi-talented artist and instructor. Through The Seniors Arts & Music Series (SAMS), she taught art and singing classes, and performed Latin-inspired music concerts. Here is her SAMS Story:

“As a multidisciplinary artist, I was blessed to work with the seniors in different art genres. I worked on a few art projects, including drawing, watercolours, and acrylic painting. The workshops aimed to help seniors enjoy the moment as a community, work together, and learn that perfection was not the goal but enjoying the process in a safe and welcoming environment.

As for music, I have enjoyed 2 different adventures. One was as a performer alongside Greg Noguera, singing top hits from the 40s to the 70s, bringing these sweet seniors a time travel back to their memories and dancing years. The other was as a singing instructor, where I prepared a guided sing-along that culminated in a showcase on the last day of class. It was definitely a learning experience for me and for participants.

The participants got to relax, enjoy the process and understand that in both art and music, we must allow a flow and be patient with ourselves. It was sweet to see – especially in the community painting project – the excitement of a finished artwork made by all while singing along and creating together.

For me, I have loved every minute! From prepping sessions that must be fun and exciting to reminding myself and the seniors that life is an endless spiral ladder of learning, and we must enjoy every minute of this journey, alone and with each other. I feel blessed and grateful I got to meet so many wonderful seniors, and I was able to share whatever I could from my own life adventure. Big Thanks to MAC! For giving me this opportunity, I will always cherish.” – Carla Gonzalez
