Artist Statement
In homage to the multi-generational immigrant families that build their lives in Ward 3, this Alectra box concept uses flowers as symbols of growth and providing nurture for the city. The design uses flowers that are both national and native to countries of where many immigrants come from, which include Ukraine, Poland, Vietnam, and Pakistan. By tying these flowers together and connecting them into one stem with flora found natively in Mississauga, the unity of its form expresses the symbiotic relationship of the community. Each flower cohabits with one another, and shares its experiences. This reflects the community of where the box is placed in, where inclusivity and diversity are a crucial part of its culture. Likewise, this connected stem that diverges into unique flowers, also converges to become a pathway for the figures illustrated in the design. The stems help pave a mode for all sorts of movement. It is transformed as a road, to carry cars and people who bike, and also becomes sidewalks, to allow families to walk and run. Below the space of the stem forms a green space, in which community members coexist with flowers, relaxing, playing, and finding ways to nurture the flowers that give the very opportunity to have that space. This can be seen in the figures that are planting new sprouts of flowers and watering the plants. Finally, the design uses high contrasting bright colours to accentuate and celebrate the diversity that makes the community unique and uplifting.
